Parental Notification Act

This comic-style infographic was created in partnership with Ci3 at the University of Chicago and distributed to Illinois legislators in support of the Repeal of the Parental Notification Act.

The Parental Notification Act requires minors to notify a parent or guardian before seeking an abortion. Most young people will voluntarily involve a parent when they experience a pregnancy. Those who do not inform their parents often have good reasons, such as fear of abuse or loss of support. So in practice the law is harmful to minors in an unsupportive family situation. The judicial bypass process provides these young people with a way around the law, but it is difficult and sometimes impossible for them to navigate. This comic shows a teen character going through the convoluted judicial bypass process.
